“DESERT RUN”

 

Another one from my “speed painting” current trend. Although “speed” is not even the right description for this process because although it didn´t took me 12 hours or so to complete it also didn´t took me 30 minutes either.
But I´m enjoying creating my world in this style where details are more about shapes and visual sugestions than on me actually having to draw them.
It has more of a traditional painting feel too and that is something that I always try to achieve.

Someone told me the creature style resemples something like “Dr Seuss”, but it was totally accidental if it does as that author was never part of my imaginary world or was ever a reference from any of my thing.

All my pics are more inspired by 70s european comics, like Meziére´s – VALERIAN or by novels / movie like DUNE. Although when it comes to fantasy type scenery my main inspiration source will always be The Neverending Story, book and movie.

“THE RIDE”

More of a book cover than anything else but I just did this for a video tutorial so I decided to post it here anyway.

This is a good example of what I mean when I say everyone can learn to paint pics like this simply because it does not contain any elements that need you to know how to “draw” them in the classic sense. If you take a look everything in here is just based on simple shapes and not on details that have been drawn. It´s all about the composition , the lighting and the color.

And no, it was not inspired by the movie “ARRIVAL” although I love it… so … well perhaps it was…somehow…

This is also a good example of the type of images I love to create without any planning whatsoever. I hate sketches and planning my illustrations. I just take a blank camvas and go with the flow.

Not even I, know what I am going to paint next because if I did any planning for my art , I would already be imagining the next pic once the planning was done for the current one and i would never complete anything. I like the mystery of just letting my imagination go.

ROGUE WARRIOR : ROBOT FIGHTER 2

All my work is very influenced by Cinema.
Currently my favorite low budget space opera saga is centered around the work of director Neil Johnson which has made one of my favorite space adventures of recent years; a movie called Humanity´s End. A low budget production which is a lot of fun, visually amazing and with an great soundtrack too.

Another  recent Neil Johnson space opera it was called Rogue Warrior : Robot Fighter which tells the adventures of Sienna; a character played by actress Tracey Birdsall,  which is like a female space pilot with a particular Heavy Metal Magazine and Barbarella type feel.

Here´s what I did with some variations included.

I rarely do “fan art” , almost never actually but I had this unfinished pic around for ages and recently when talking with the director Neil Johnson online I mentioned to him that I had this around and so I decided to polish it.
Also my ClipStudio Paint got a new update and it was a good way to test it.
Besides the only fan part here in this new pic are actually the Sienna and Hoagland characters, the hero and the floating robot. Everything else is part of my own imagination and universe as I love to insert my own landscapes to create almost like an alternative version of the original product.

I absolutely love to create scifi cover art and illustrate movie posters based on stuff that does not exist and so this one was my take on a possible sequel for the Sienna adventures if they would be done with my visual colorful style instead.

As i´m planning to create an entire new portfolio based on movie poster artwork, this conversation with Neil Johnson gave me the perfect reason to start. So expect to see more movie posters in the near future.

“ELDORADO SPACEPORT” – Blender ANIMATICS – Test 3

“ELDORADO SPACEPORT” – Blender ANIMATICS

It was not in my plans to create an animation out of the low poly basic models I did in Blender sometime ago but things just kept building up and I ended up with a bunch of random animated “takes” somehow.
Then I thought that maybe they could be edited to form some sort of animatic although I never planned any logic into the thing when I first build this stuff.

Also it was never my intent to create a complete fully rendered animation or anything as I don´t have the hardware for more complicated adventures or time for 3D, unfortunately.

I built this “space city” model because I wanted to create some illustrations based on a pre-existing 3D Blender model to paint on top, but then I thought that as long as I had built it, I should try to animate it a bit…
A few weeks later I ended up with more than 40 different “animated takes”.

So what you see is a really rough space port thing. I had a lot of fun edditing all those bits togheter and adding the sound effects into it, using the amazing free video editing software HitFilm 4 Express which you can get at : https://hitfilm.com/express
If you found  that some bits had some fuzzy “narrative” logic that´s because I´ve worked with random takes which had no initial planning of being used to build a logical storyline animation. 😉

Secondary concept art / sketchbook tests or illustrations I didn´t used.

When you work fulltime in illustration you end up doing a ton of stuff you never show anyone. Either test pics, speedpainting images, illustration experiments or just loose sketches created for fun, each illustrator has plenty of stuff like which mostly never gets to see the light of day.
In this batch now, there´s some test pics, illustration I didn´t liked, illustration I like but didn´t used because I want to create better versions, or early color tests, pics I did just to illustrate video tutorials, sketchbook color stuff, etc.

Some people out there are of the opinion that an artist should never reveal his inferior artwork or –making of– test pieces because that can give a wrong impression of his work quality in general to potential clients out there. I do not agree.

I´ve always showcased my best and my worst stuff all over the places and I never got less clients or commissions because of that. In fact people like to see that illustrators are not those magic crafters that can come up with imaginary worlds out of thin air when they want and so I like to let people see that I have plenty of stuff done which is just as bad or regular as any other person out there.
I have a lot more regular pieces like this spread around my “failed pics” folders through out my hardrives and so now and then I´ll show you more, for now hope you have enjoyed  these.

O trabalho que inspirou a minha história de aventuras Marcianas está no conteúdo deste meu outro site.
Publicado originalmente no Forúm DVD Mania (em 2004) , expandido e actualizado dez anos mais tarde ( e a precisar já de nova actualização ) este foi o material que acompanhou a minha imaginação/investigação e que pode ( e deve) ser lido como complemento da Banda Desenhada pois contextualiza muito do humor contido na história. O objectivo do site ( e do post no Forúm DVD Mania ) foi mesmo o de apresentar em Português com uma organização coerente muito sobre este tópico que só existe na sua maioria em inglês e também tentar separar as idiotices imbecis que já se escreveram sobre o tema ao logo dos anos daquilo que realmente tem mesmo interesse enigmático e científico sobre o mesmo e que não podia estar mais na ordem do dia apesar de não se notar absolutamente nada sobre isso em Portugal.
Portanto se quiserem perceber o verdadeiro contexto da minha banda-desenhada de Fantasia os links a consultar estão nas imagens abaixo. 😉

“ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS : THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ZIPH” – VOLUME THREE ; FANTASY / SCI-FI COMICS ; (2009 Version : Traditional Watercolors / Acrylics / Color Pencils ).

Now the idea here is to post my story , page by page as many people like to scroll up and down to read this things as it is now and not everyone downloads pdfs at random just to check stuff up. Click here to read PART ONE on the last post I did and click here to read PART TWO.

“ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS : THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ZIPH” – VOLUME THREE ; FANTASY / SCI-FI COMICS ; ( 2009 Version : Traditional Watercolors / Acrylics / Color Pencils ).

This “ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS” was one of my last personal projects created entirely in traditional medium; it took me 5 years to complete this ( between my other professional graphic design work for a software house ) and it was created , drawn and painted with real color pencils, acrylics and watercolors.
This 2009 version created between 2004 and 2009 was actually a “new” version for this idea which I had in my imagination since I was 17 back in 1987 when I did the first version.

When the internet came along , I discovered, “Coast to Coast AM”; “Art Bell” ; “Richard Hoagland” ; “George Noory” ; “Graham Hancock” and all you can imagine if you know what I´m talking about and all that stuff started to morph into a new version of my old fantasy “The Hobbit style” adventure. My old Thorondor world became part of an ancient Mars and so this new ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS was born.
I created this just for fun, to experiment, to learn and to also use some of the images in my portfolio and it worked because it got me many commissions at the time when I was going fulltime treelance with this illustration thing.

I plan to remake this and correct all the narrative / pacing issues one of these days in full digital , but for now here´s “the original”. Enjoy ; ( English version revised by Will Kallif from StormTheCastle.com (Thanks Will) ).
This entire work was done without any planning whatsoever. I had no idea what was going to happen in the next page as I never plan any of my stories and so this is a good example of what usually comes out… good and bad. 😉
