And here´s the step-by-step for this one. This pic started when I mirrored one of the sides from the illustration I did last time and then I got this idea. Started to paint on top of the original painting modifying stuff as I went along and so the end result was something like this:

People keep asking where I get the idea for my pics. Well, I read a lot. Reading books makes you use your imagination and so I have a lot of practice in imaginining stuff. If you want to learn how to draw, read books, ( not picture books, but novels ) as that will make you imagine stuff a lot and so when it comes to drawing being able to visualize something in your mind is very important.
Also on inspiration, when it comes to Mars in particularly  I have my own interest on the subject for decades now and in particularly the Cydonia/Face on Mars controversy so I have a ton of inspiration material from that too. Also I´ve listened to the Art Bell talk radio show for ages when he still was on the air and so there´s no short of ideas from that too.

If you like Art Bell, there´s a great alternative to his show that you may not know about it. It´s called “THE UNEXPLAINED.TV” hosted by the British journalist Howard Hughes and it´s the next best thing to Bell you ever eard, as this guy is as good as he was when Art did his radio show. The unexplainded.tv site has already a ton of fascinating interviews on podcast that will fire your imagination too. I listen to that a lot when I´m painting; this pic was done listening to one of his old Mars shows.

“MONUMENTS OF MARS : TERRAFORMING TECH – GAIA 2” – Illustration / Concept Artwork.

When I did my recent Mars pic, I mirrored one side of the image and suddenly come up with a big column at the center which first I thought I was going to transform into some sort of a temple, but then I got the idea of changing it into some sort of high tech terraforming hardware. So this is more or less a sequel for the last Martian illustration I did. I had to do this because this image refused to leave my mind until I did it.
Now I have a board game to illustrate so let´s see if I can stop creating this Mars pics for a while. 🙂

I´ll post the making of for this pic tomorrow with the usual step-by-step creation process as I usually do with some of my paintings posted here on this freelance illustration website.

So as usual here´s a glimpse into the making of for my new terraforming Mars pic.
It´s the possible breakdown of my process although in reality things are not done as linear as I need to showcase here as when I´m drawing I´m doing details and things all over the place as I have a crazy almost random working flow when it comes to create my worlds. But nevertheless I think this can help you to find the logic behind the creation of my second (new) “MONUMENTS OF MARS : TERRAFORMING DAYS” pic.

“MONUMENTS OF MARS : TERRAFORMING DAYS” – Illustration / Concept Art

“MONUMENTS OF MARS : TERRAFORMING DAYS”

As I´ll be illustrating for a board game next before I started that project I wanted to warm up so I created another of my Martian illustrations which I plan to turn into a Mars book one day perhaps.
This one was inspired by the Terraforming concept for Mars and so it depicts the time when man is already changing the surface of the planet for sometime and things are starting to show some changes.

When I get to do a book with all my Mars images you´ll be the first to know. For now I´m just having fun painting this stuff to relax from my earthly children book projects for clients. You can see a larger version for this image if you visit my main gallery right at my “HOME” page.

“BEWARE OF THE NOSE BITING MONSTER” : Page MAKING OF – from Doodles and Sketches to the final illustration.

Here´s some pages from a recent completed childrens book. Many of the sketches I show here belong to pages and color tests that ended up not appearing in the final book but as many of you like to see this making of stuff , this is just a little glimpse into the creative process that went behind the illustration of this book.

This was my favorite children story to illustrate back in 2017 and one of the best I´ve read in a while but at the same time it was one of the most difficult ones to illustrate as it was as story that was purely based in two characters interacting very close and the whole concept is more based on an emotion that on something that happens to them.
Nevertheless this was great to do and so here are some images out of it; making of stuff.
To get the complete finished pics you should get the book soon to be published; written by Jay Milentsky and illustrated by Luis Peres. 😉

All this was done using Mischief for sketches, ArtRage for some line work, and Photoshop for the final art and texture work.

MUSEUM : Drawings from when I was a kid – “The Adventures of Prince Ziph – PT version : As Aventuras dos Príncipe Ziph” ( 1992 – 22 years old )

“The Adventures of Prince Ziph – PT version : As Aventuras dos Príncipe Ziph” – V2.0

Time once again for more bad art from long ago as people tend to enjoy looking at my early efforts at this stuff.
This particular one was my second atempt to put to paper my initial concept for the adventures of Prince Ziph which later became my “ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS” fantasy comics which you can download for free here on this website of course.
These early 92 pages are just a sketchbook, ink doodle version which I didn´t took further at the time.
I had just read “THE HOBBIT” for the first time around 1984, way before Tolkien´s name became the mainstream movie connection of today and I wanted to create my own fantasy story without many human or human-like characters in it.
So I came up with these spider-looking fellows as I also wanted to play with peoples fear of spiders and create a good “spider” hero which has his adventures in a fantasy land similar to the one from The Neverending Story ( book and movie ) which is still one of my my inspiration sources. I did the first sketch pages back in 1987.

Later around 2004 when I started to create the current version for this original sketch work from 87, this fantasy land of Ziph became the Planet Mars because I was heavily influenced by the Art Bell paranormal talk radio show and in particular by the Face on Mars and Monuments of Mars controversy under Richard C.Hoagland´s work.
By the way, although I have a similar wacky death grim rieper character in my story that had nothing to do with Terry Pratchet´s Discworld at all. It was 1987 and Portugal never knew anything about Pratchet´s novels at the time because they weren´t available here and remember there was no internet either. Discworld only appeared in Portugal around early 2000s and it never took of at all in sales, if I´m not mistaken only the first book was released here to a very poor reception and so nothing more was published.
The fact the I also have a very dark humor and a death character it´s just one of those coincidences as me and Terry Pratchet seemed to share the same sick sense of humor.

And here´s another step-by-step depiction of the creative process behind one of my images. This time I took a different approach and started this spaceport scene out of a common atmospheric photograph from England I found on the web.
I liked the mood and the light and so I just started to doodle and sketching on top of it.
I did so much sketching over it that it ended up becoming the final spaceport maybe deep into some kind of jungle planet you see in the final result.

“Thunder and Lightning” – Still getting good reviews on Amazon

Noticed just now that one of the books I did 5 years ago (back in 2013);  “THUNDER AND LIGHTNING” written by the wonderful Mary Evans which was a pleasure to work with at the time still has excellent reviews from all the readers; all FIVE STARS up until now. Really cool.

“MONUMENTS OF MARS : FUTURE PAST” – Illustration / Concept Artwork – Making Of / Step-by-Step creative breakdown.

And here´s the possible step-by-step creative breakdown out of my almost random painting process when it comes to this more scenery epic scenes.
I know people enjoy knowing about the creation of these science fiction illustrations so here it goes.
I´m also showing a few tonal variations at the end.

Entirely painted in Photoshop using mostly default brushes with a couple of texture one. You don´t need to have a ton of different brushes to paint anything as having huge collection of brushes won´t make you draw or paint better anyway. 😉

“MONUMENTS OF MARS : FUTURE PAST” – Illustration / Concept Artwork

I have this illustration book project for years “MONUMENTS OF MARS“, based on my own interest on the classic fringe topic and so now and then in between my regular children book commissions when I get a visual idea on my mind I do another illustration piece based on it.
So this is another one; this time with a few “easter eggs” for those who are into this subject to find.

When I get to do a book with all my Mars images you´ll be the first to know. For now I´m just having fun painting this stuff to relax from my earthly children book projects for clients. You can see a larger version for this image if you visit my main gallery right at my “HOME” page.

I´ll post the making of for this pic tomorrow with the usual step-by-step creation process as I usually do with some of my paintings posted here on this freelance illustration website.
