GENERATION MARS: THE GARDEN – Step by Step Making Of

Here´s an example of the type of pics I don´t do very often as they require a lot of human character figures which is something I have not much interest in creating (or talent for) as I preffer to focus on environments instead.

But now and then like in the case of this exciting story by Douglas Meredith about Mars for book One of the Generation Mars series, I do need to create something like this. So I´ll go and do a mix between matte-painting and regular digital painting if I can call it that…
Anyway here´s a breakdown of how I did this one image for the book for all you guys and girls out there that enjoy seeing how an image comes togheter.

GENERATION MARS : BOOK SERIES – Martian landscape

Here´s one of the first Mars surface images I did for the upcoming Generation Mars book series. This first one in particular won´t be the one used in the book as the second version best suits the description of the whole place presented in the text.
The first one is actually one of my favorites anyway.

The one which was chosen by the author and was built based on his detailed input of where every item needed to be is the second version of this one below.

The Searchers – Scifi Cover Art Illustration

“ATTACK ALL HUMANS” – Board game Illustration 5 – Tonal variations.

Well, continuing with my posts about the “ATTACK ALL HUMANS” board game, here are a few more pics with plenty of color and tonal variations I did some months ago for this project, soon to be available.

This is heavily inspired in the old 50s flying saucers invasion movies, but now we are the aliens invading the earth which is a lot more fun.

“ATTACK ALL HUMANS” – Board game Illustration – Tonal variations for an unused painting.

Yet another painting I did many months ago for the “ATTACK ALL HUMANS” board game, now in its test phase. These are a few of the tonal variations I did to play with color for this scene back then.
Although I think you won´t be seeing this image in the game as the Hollywood sign has some huge copyright fees attached and so this image was scratched from the actual game because of that.

” SPACE PORT – ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES”

” SPACE PORT – ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES”

This was inspired by one of my favorite scifi movies “NATURAL CITY“. I love oriental cinema and this movie in particular has a spaceport romantic scene that inspires me a lot,  so the whole feel for my pic came from that bit.

I was not in a rush and I painted in several days at the end of the day to relaxed from payed commission work.
I never do sketches, color tests, or anything related to any sort of planning whatsover.
All my “sketches” are done inside my imagination before a pic starts. When I have the visual “sketched” in my mind, ( color mood included ),  I just start to paint the pic and then the aditional texture work if needed brings it to life at the end.

I could have spent easily about 10 or 20 more hours on this just zooming in every detail and refining it to a point this would look almost photo realistic. Its easy for me to do that, but I don´t have time for creating “completed” paintings no more because I have commissions to do for other type of projects; usually children book stuff away from this type of art that I love.
Since I left Photoshop for good and started to paint witg Clip Studio Paint I actually like the way the brushes can give a more traditional feel to a paint rigth away and so I left this image in a rough phase because I like the “painting” feel where we see all the bush strokes and all that.

This also ended up with some sort of John Harris space art feel which was totally not intentional but unavoidable since his space scenes were really a big part of my childhoood back in the late 70s.

Goodbye Photoshop, Hello Clip Studio Paint : “West of Oz – South of Fantasia” – Sixth Clip Studio painting.

And here it goes. Here´s the final illustration I´ve been working on the last few days just to relax between another book project I´m doing right now and which has nothing to do with this image now. 🙂
I need to paint this images of my own universes just for fun or I would spend all my life just illustrating other peoples dream visions, so I try to always have a little time to do my own personal work and create the universes that I like.
This is starting to become a series of paintings so here goes another: “West of Oz : South of Fantasia”. Inspired of course by The Wizard of Oz and by The Neverending Story.

The only idea I had for this image before starting was that I wanted to show the signs point to OZ and Fantasia and that I wanted to do some sort of creature on a field. Other than that I´m as surprised as to what this image turned out to be as all of you are. Otherwise I would be bored to death just trying to paint an already planned illustration.

Here´s the complete making of with all the images now in one place as the other posts I did about the work in progress now are scattered about this blog in between other stuff and people always like to see how I do my paintings.

By the way it´s very important to mirror your painting while you´re doing it because it helps you notice things to fix and also as in this case you might find out that an oposite angle is after all the right one to tell the story you want to tell all along.

After more than 15 years using Photoshop for most of my original illustration/concept-art work stuff, I´m replacing it with Clip Studio Paint ( also known as Manga Studio in Japan ).
It can do most of the things I did with Photoshop when it comes to creating a painting, the layers work the same way, etc, but it comes with some really cool pre-made brushes that I love to use. Also it has some great comic creation features which are outstanding.

Don´t let the name of the software fool you, it is not a clipart creation tool but a fully developed software for painting and illustration. Thing of a cross between the classic Painter with plenty of the Photoshop advantages mixed in and you get Clip Studio Paint.
It is known as Manga Studio in Japan but the name is also not very good there too because people may think this is just something to create Manga, which again, it is not.
I have no idea why somebody didn´t give this amazing full illustration creative painting tool a really good name that reflects the true nature of what it can do but for now we´re stuck with “Clip Studio Paint” which must be the most awful and misleading name someone ever gave to an amazing painting sofware.

Poster Artwork : Scifi Concept Art / 2001 A Space Odyssey / The Neverending Story inspired epic space scene.

This was my last Photoshop big painting before I moved into Clip Studio Paint. I love to create these epic space scenes and this one started also in Blender as I had created a space station model and I wanted to see how I could paint something based on that.
Then the need for this image came along and I thought it would be the perfect reason to try it out.
I love space art and in particularly vast epic scenery and backgrounds. I like a lot to build images based on little details, sometimes nothing more than silhouettes but I find them perfect to add scale to each of the imaginary universes I create.

Despite the obvious 2001 Space Odyssey inspiration you can relate too at first glance in fact this concept art painting has more to do with The Neverending Story than you can imagine by reading this.
If you know about that 1984 classic fantasy movie, ( and book ) , you´ll remember the first image of the Ivory Tower. Well that concept art matte painting thing changed my life when I was 14 and that is the reason why I wanted to became an illustrator. To create epic worlds like that.

There´s always a little bit of The Neverending Story in all my artworks and in this case despite the 2001 Monolith as the central piece if you know about the Neverending Story movie you´ll remember the floating asteroids scene at the end with the Ivory still standing floating alone among the stars. Well it´s no coincidence I´ve mixed both the Monolith here ( I needed it for the logo ) and the whole rusty color silhouette space background with that epic slab floating on a piece of rock.

Also there´s a bit of Flash Gordon in it too with the retro-50s-scifi rockets in there which I love to paint all the time too.

The foreground was the most difficult thing on this piece. It took forever to find the right balance between the characters and the focus of the image which should be the space scene outside.
Overall I do like the end result , which is not that usual as I tend to dislike all my paintings once they are finished.

“ELDORADO SPACEPORT” – Blender ANIMATICS – Test 3

“ELDORADO SPACEPORT” – Blender ANIMATICS

It was not in my plans to create an animation out of the low poly basic models I did in Blender sometime ago but things just kept building up and I ended up with a bunch of random animated “takes” somehow.
Then I thought that maybe they could be edited to form some sort of animatic although I never planned any logic into the thing when I first build this stuff.

Also it was never my intent to create a complete fully rendered animation or anything as I don´t have the hardware for more complicated adventures or time for 3D, unfortunately.

I built this “space city” model because I wanted to create some illustrations based on a pre-existing 3D Blender model to paint on top, but then I thought that as long as I had built it, I should try to animate it a bit…
A few weeks later I ended up with more than 40 different “animated takes”.

So what you see is a really rough space port thing. I had a lot of fun edditing all those bits togheter and adding the sound effects into it, using the amazing free video editing software HitFilm 4 Express which you can get at : https://hitfilm.com/express
If you found  that some bits had some fuzzy “narrative” logic that´s because I´ve worked with random takes which had no initial planning of being used to build a logical storyline animation. 😉
