O trabalho que inspirou a minha história de aventuras Marcianas está no conteúdo deste meu outro site.
Publicado originalmente no Forúm DVD Mania (em 2004) , expandido e actualizado dez anos mais tarde ( e a precisar já de nova actualização ) este foi o material que acompanhou a minha imaginação/investigação e que pode ( e deve) ser lido como complemento da Banda Desenhada pois contextualiza muito do humor contido na história. O objectivo do site ( e do post no Forúm DVD Mania ) foi mesmo o de apresentar em Português com uma organização coerente muito sobre este tópico que só existe na sua maioria em inglês e também tentar separar as idiotices imbecis que já se escreveram sobre o tema ao logo dos anos daquilo que realmente tem mesmo interesse enigmático e científico sobre o mesmo e que não podia estar mais na ordem do dia apesar de não se notar absolutamente nada sobre isso em Portugal.

“AS AVENTURAS DO PRÍNCIPE ZIPH” : POD Print on Demand HARDCOVER EDITION

These are some photos from the first test print edition I created several years ago with the original Portuguese version of my comics, “AS AVENTURAS DO PRÍNCIPE ZIPH – EM BUSCA DO LIVRO PERDIDO” ( “THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ZIPH – IN SEARCH OF THE LOST BOOK” ), then renamed “ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS” which I like best.
It´s a print on demand HARDCOVER edition and this book contains all the 4 volumes I later printed as separated editions for the English version.
So this original hardcover Portuguese edition contains the entire 190 pages of original comic art in one single hardcover book.

I used the services of lulu.com which for me is still the best company out there to print these types of books and I was really happy with the result as this book turned out great; excelent printing, perfect color reproduction, excelent hardcover,etc.

“ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS : THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ZIPH” – VOLUME THREE ; FANTASY / SCI-FI COMICS ; (2009 Version : Traditional Watercolors / Acrylics / Color Pencils ).

“ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS : THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ZIPH” – VOLUME THREE ; FANTASY / SCI-FI COMICS ; ( 2009 Version : Traditional Watercolors / Acrylics / Color Pencils ).

This “ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS” was one of my last personal projects created entirely in traditional medium; it took me 5 years to complete this ( between my other professional graphic design work for a software house ) and it was created , drawn and painted with real color pencils, acrylics and watercolors.
This 2009 version created between 2004 and 2009 was actually a “new” version for this idea which I had in my imagination since I was 17 back in 1987 when I did the first version.

When the internet came along , I discovered, “Coast to Coast AM”; “Art Bell” ; “Richard Hoagland” ; “George Noory” ; “Graham Hancock” and all you can imagine if you know what I´m talking about and all that stuff started to morph into a new version of my old fantasy “The Hobbit style” adventure. My old Thorondor world became part of an ancient Mars and so this new ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS was born.
I created this just for fun, to experiment, to learn and to also use some of the images in my portfolio and it worked because it got me many commissions at the time when I was going fulltime treelance with this illustration thing.

I plan to remake this and correct all the narrative / pacing issues one of these days in full digital , but for now here´s “the original”. Enjoy ; ( English version revised by Will Kallif from StormTheCastle.com (Thanks Will) ).
This entire work was done without any planning whatsoever. I had no idea what was going to happen in the next page as I never plan any of my stories and so this is a good example of what usually comes out… good and bad. 😉
I´ll post Book 4 (the final book) later. For now here´s PART THREE of this Martian adventure.

“THE MONUMENTS of MARS” : COMICS Color Sketches & Tests . Work in Progress

Besides wanting to do a comics adaptation of the novel “The Neverending Story” one of these days, another one of my dream projects is to put to paper a story that I have in my imagination since I started to follow the Face on Mars thing more than 30 years ago and which is a mix of all those fringe themes with the cosmological scope of an Olaf Stapledon I love called “The Last and First Men” written back in the 1930s which even was a major influence on Arthur Clarke for his Rendez-vous-with-Rama novels later on.
So I have my own take on a cosmological saga spanning millions of years and it all starts with a little nod to the Martian enigma. I´ve been creating some illustrations to train for that project which you can see on my main gallery here on this site ( the Mars ones ) , but a couple years ago I had some time to spare and I started to doodle what you will see next.
I wanted to keep it loose in style and so I just kept on sketching and painting without much thought put into it. So this is some sort of sketchbook artwork.
Enjoy, although the text is still in Portuguese here.

I didn´t took it further due to lack of time but also because I noticed that I was starting to use an american comics visual language on the layouts and I don´t want to create a scifi comics story within that particular style. I want it to look like an old European BD (comics) from the golden age of French-Belgium BD of the late 1970s, something within a Luc Orient / Valerian / Bernard Prince / Druuna type of thing and stay as much further away possible from the american super-hero visual formula.
I plan to restart this sometime in the future as my scifi story is still developing inside my imagination and so when I have the time I will work on this for sure. Maybe I won´t just do a comics story but a mix between a novel an illustration book and comics.
Let´s see what the future brings.
